Jesus, the perfect mirror of God

In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets; ² but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. ³ He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature, upholding the universe by his word of power. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, ⁴ having become as much superior to angels as the name he has obtained is more excellent than theirs.

Three years ago, my family made the trek to the happiest place on earth – Disney World! Sources of awe were endless and varied – from roller-coaster masterpieces to electric parades to Mickey Mouse ice cream bars. What a world it is – not just in size and scope, but in the countries represented each day among the guests enjoying the park. It’s a small world is more than a ride at Disney World.

One day, I overheard a couple desperately trying to communicate with the sales attendant in a gift shop. Neither could understand what the other was saying and there was a lot of frustration. I went over and held out my phone with the Google translate app open – an app that has helped me on more than one trip. Once learning their country, I spoke into the app and it took my jumbled noises and made them coherent to this couple from Portugal. There was an immediate look of relief across their faces as what was once foreign became familiar.

God can seem foreign to many of us. Old Testament stories can be confusing and seem like a foreign language sometimes. How can we begin to understand in part who God is? Our translator is Jesus. The Scripture teaches us that Jesus perfectly mirrors God and is stamped with God’s nature. As we reflect on the Gospel stories of Jesus Christ, we learn about the very heart and character of our amazing God. Jesus is everything God has to say to us!
